BOSTON WINS SEE-SAW THRILLER WITH TWO RUNS IN TOP OF NINTH
Boston picked up a quick two runs in the top of the first of Virgil Trucks. With one out, Johnny Pesky walked, Bobby Doerr singled, then Ted Williams singled, scoring Pesky. Doerr, who had advanced to third on Williams’ hit, scored on a Vern Stephens sac fly.
The Red Sox made it 3-0 in the third, when Pesky walked and scored again, this time on an Eddie Lake error.
Detroit finally broke through against Ellis Kinder in the fifth. With one down, Johnny Lipon was hit by a pitch(Lipon also plunked George Vico in the fourth inning). George Kell doubled, then Vic Wertz hit a sacrifice fly to plate Lipon.
The very next inning, Lake singled in Johnny Groth to make it a one run game. Tex Hugson took over for Kinder and had a rough go of it. In just .2 innings, he gave up a homerun to Wertz, a double to Hoot Evers and two walks. That put Detroit in front, 4-3.
Ted Williams(5) would tie the game in the top of the eighth with his third homerun in consecutive games. Jack Kramer(1-1) would replace Hughson on the mound.
In the top of the ninth, Al Zarilla(1) hit his first homer of the year to put Boston up, 5-4. After two quick outs, the Red Sox got what would prove to be a huge insurance run, when Kramer singled, Dom DiMaggio doubled, Pesky walked to load the bases and Doerr singled to score Kramer, for a 6-4 Boston lead.
The Tigers were not done, however. Kramer allowed a lead off double in the bottom of the ninth to Evers. He walked Groth and Smith lined out. Kramer then walked Vico to load the bases. Pinch hitter, Paul Campbell squeezed out a third base on balls, which forced in Detroit’s fifth run.
Boston pulled the plug on Kramer, and brought in Masterson. With the infield in, Lake hit a grounder to short, and Groth was forced at the plate. Lipon then lined to third to end the ballgame.
