1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

May 7. Gm#16 Municipal Stadium Cleveland 8 Boston 2

INDIANS POUND RED SOX, 8-2

Ted Williams(6) hit a two run, homerun off Bob Lemon in the first inning, but after that, it was all downhill for Boston, who lost an 8-2 decision to Cleveland at Municipal Stadium.

After the Splendid Splinter’s blast gave his team the early lead, Red Sox starter, Mickey McDermott(3-1) took the mound and proceeded to give it right back. Two walks, a double, a single and another walk later, the game was tied.

McDermott lasted just four and two thirds innings, with Cleveland adding two more runs in the fifth on a key error by Williams in left field.

Lemon worked seven innings and though he walked four, hit a batter and allowed the gopher ball to Ted, he limited Boston to just two hits as he collected the win.

Bob Kennedy’s three run clout in the bottom of the seventh off Frank Quinn, put the game on ice.

The Sox now head to St. Louis. Things kick off with a doubleheader tomorrow.
