ROUGH FIRST INNING LEADS TO PARNELL’S FIRST LOSS
Boston’s Mel Parnell(3-1) gave up three runs in the bottom of the first and the Senators never looked back, going on to defeat the Red Sox, 6-2. The loss was Parnell’s first after three straight wins.
After retiring the first batter he faced, Parnell gave up a single to Buddy Lewis, walked Al Kozar and allowed another base hit to Clyde Vollmer, loading the bases. Lewis then scored on an rbi groundout by Ned Yost. Another free pass to Eddie Robinson reloaded the bases, then Sam Dente stroked a two run single.
Washington starter, Ray Scarborough held the Red Sox at bay for much of the game. The lone run he allowed came in the top of the fifth, when Parnell helped his own cause by hitting a sacrifice fly which plated Birdie Tebbetts.
The Senators broke it open in the eighth on yet another terrible relief outing by Earl Johnson. The beleaguered reliever did not retire a single batter, walking Kozar and Vollmer back to back, then surrendering a double to Yost.
Tex Hughson came on and issued a single and a sac fly to give Washington a five run lead. Scarborough set down Boston in order in the top of the ninth.
Other American League scores: Philadelphia 8 New York 5; St. Louis 8 Detroit 3. Only game scheduled
