JOHNNY GROTH’S TWO HOME RUNS END RED SOX WINNING STREAK
Detroit’s Johnny Groth stopped an eight game win streak for the Boston Red Sox, belting a pair of homers.
Groth had a solo blast off Ellis Kinder(1-5) in the fifth and also hit a three run bomb off Jack Kramer, in the top of the seventh inning.
Boston dug an early hole, as Bobby Doerr bobbled a grounder hit by the first batter of the game, Don Kolloway. Three singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly later, Detroit led 3-0, all runs unearned.
Ted Williams hit a two run single in the home fifth, for Boston’s only runs. The Red Sox now hope to get back on track against the last place Browns, who come into Fenway tomorrow.
Other American League scores: New York 13 St. Louis 3; Chic-Wash and Clev-Phila both postponed by rain.
