TEBBETTS ENDS 13 INNING SLUGFEST WITH HOME RUN
Birdie Tebbetts(3)homered for the second straight game, this time with Vern Stephens aboard in the bottom of the 13th, to win a wild, slugfest with the Washington Senators.
The game couldn’t have come at a worse time in the schedule. Boston is due to play a double header against Philadelphia tomorrow, and the bench players will be called into duty to spell the exhausted starters.
Things couldn’t have started much worse for Ellis Kinder. He surrendered seven runs in just 6.2 innings, giving up three home runs, two of them three run clouts, in the process.
But Bobby Doerr, Al Zarilla, Billy Goodman and Tebbetts, kept the Red Sox in the contest. Doerr had four runs batted in, with a triple and a sacrifice fly. Zarilla tripled and doubled twice. Goodman had four singles, scoring two runs and Tebbetts, in addition to his game winning home run, had a single and sacrifice fly. Sparkplug, Johnny Pesky was on base all day, drawing three walks, singling twice and laying down two successful sacrifices.
Ted Williams, though he singled twice in eight at bats, was largely a non factor.
Much maligned pitcher, Earl Johnson(1-3) picked up his first win of the year. Forced into service as Boston’s fifth pitcher of the day, Johnson did not allow a run, allowing three hits, with one strikeout and one walk.
