RED SOX SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER WITH A’S; KEEP PACE WITH YANKS
Boston split a Memorial Day twinbill with the Philadelpha A’s, dropping game one, 7-6, then coming back to win the night cap, 10-8.
The opener began with Joe Dobson squaring off against Art Fowler for the A’s. Fowler took a no hitter into the sixth, where it was broken up by Lou Stringer, who singled, pinch hitting for Dobson. Despite allowing just two runs, Dobson was wild and largely ineffective, allowing six base on balls, two of which ending up scoring.
After a low scoring first half of the game, each team wound up scoring five runs over the last two innings. Philadelphia took a 7- 4 lead into the bottom of the ninth, highlighted by two run blasts by both Eddie Joost and Hank Majeski.
Boston battled gamely in the bottom of the ninth. Merl Combs and Tommy O’ Brien both walked. Walt Dropo then doubled, plating Combs and advancing O’Brien to third base. With a fatigued bullpen, the Bosox took and chance and let Walt Masterson(2-1) bat for himself. He fanned, but Dom DiMaggio hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Red Sox within one. However, Johnny Pesky struck out to end the game.
Game two was a high scoring, seesaw battle, with six lead changes. In the end, Boston prevailed, 10-8. Despite giving up Majeski’s second homer of the day, Frank Quinn(4-0) earned the win in relief.
For Philadelphia, Joost had two doubles and a single; Majeski the forementioned home run and a single and Don White had three doubles.
For Boston, Ted Williams hit his (10th) homer and drew three walks. Goodman, O’Brien and Stephens had two hits apiece. Matt Batts had a single and two sacrifice flies.
