INDIANS’ JIM HEGAN HOMERS LATE TO BEAT RED SOX
Cleveland catcher, Jim Hegan snapped a five all tie by belting a two run home run in the eighth inning, giving the Indians a 7-5 win over Boston.
The Red Sox got a run in the first and another in the third on Ted William’s(11) home run, but Cleveland got to Mel Parnell with five runs in the last of the fourth.
Boston continued to claw their way back, scoring twice more in the top of the fifth. Williams had an rbi single and Vern Stephens an rbi double that inning.
A two base error by Larry Doby in the top of the seventh allowed the Red Sox to tie the game at five, that is, until Hegan tagged losing pitcher, Tex Hughson(0-2) with the two out, two run clout.
Other American League scores: New York 3 Chicago 0; Detroit 5 Philadelphia 4; Washington 6 St. Louis 5.
