1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

June 2. Gm# 39 Municipal Stadium Boston 5 Cleveland 3

HOME RUNS BY STEPHENS AND TEBBETTS LEAD RED SOX PAST INDIANS

With the game tied at 3 all, Vern Stephens(8) and Birdie Tebbetts(4) both homered in the top of the sixth, to lead Boston past Cleveland, 5-3.

Ellis Kinder(2-3) pitched a fabulous game. He made a mistake pitch to Mickey Vernon in the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, an error by Bobby Doerr and a walk to Al Rosen put two men on ahead of the Cleveland first baseman. Vernon made him pay by sending a Kinder hanging curve over the fence, tying the game at that point in time.

But Ellis shook off that pitch and retired the next 14 batters in a row, finally walking Larry Doby in the top of the ninth. Kinder finished his complete game win by allowing just four hits. He struck out nine and walked two.

Other American League scores: New York 12 Chicago 7; Detroit 5 Philadelphia 4; Washington 4 St. Louis 1
