TIGERS HAND McDERMOTT SECOND LOSS
Marty McDermott(7-2) gave up five runs in five innings as the Detroit Tigers won the first of a four game series, 6-1.
Boston took an early 1-0 lead against Fred Hutchingson, on two singles and two walks in the first inning. However, that lead evaporated in the bottom of the fifth, when Tiger catcher, Bob Swift smacked a two run homer.
The Red Sox fell further behind the next inning when McDermott issued back to back walks, then surrendered a double to George Kell.
McDermott was lifted for Frank Quinn. The reliever got two quick outs, but gave up a two run single to Johnny Groth.
After allowing the run in the first, winning pitcher, Hutchinson settled down and tossed a complete game.
The Red Sox and Tigers play a double header tomorrow.
Other American League scores: Chicago 2 Washington 1; Philadelphia 10 Cleveland 3; New York 11 St. Louis 3.
