2 GRAND SLAMS IN ONE GAME HIGHLIGHT RED SOX TWINBILL SWEEP OF TIGERS

Boston won twice against Detroit, in a doubleheader at Briggs Stadium. The first game was a massacre, in which both Ted Williams(12) and Vern Stephens(9), hit grand slam home runs.

Williams’ four run clout came in the top of the third off Virgil Trucks. Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky and Bobby Doerr were on base at the time.

Stephens’ grand slam came courtesy of Hal Newhouser, in the sixth. The bomb came with one out in the inning, after Marlin Stuart, the Tigers’ third pitcher of the day, gave up a two run homerun to DiMaggio(4), then walked the bases loaded, setting up Stephens.

Mel Parnell(7-1) earned the win in a complete game effort, allowing two runs on six hits.

Game two was closer. Boston scored four runs in the top of the eighth to offset a pair of Johnny Groth homers for Detroit.

Trailing 3-2 heading into the eighth inning, Ted Williams stroked a one out, two run triple, scoring DiMaggio and Pesky. Stephens then doubled in Williams, and later, Matt Batts, spelling Birdie Tebbetts, singled in Stephens.

Walt Masterson(2-1) got the start and the win in seven innings of work.

Other American League scores: Washington 7, 4 Chicago 6, 5; Philadelphia 3, 4 Cleveland 0, 2; New York 6, 6 St. Louis 4, 7
