STEPHENS’ TWO RUN SINGLE IN TOP OF 9TH LEADS RED SOX OVER BROWNS
As has been the case, the last place St. Louis Browns didn’t play anything like a last place team, giving Boston all they could handle, but in the end, the Red Sox pulled out a 7-5 win, thanks to Vern Stephens’ two run single in the top of the ninth inning.
The Browns tagged starter, Jack Kramer for five runs in only three innings, including a three run home run by Dick Kokos.
Ted Williams(14), who has been heating up of late, smacked a three run clout of his own. It was the Kid’s third homer in the last four games.
The score was knotted at five after just three innings.
Then some fine relief pitching took place. Chuck Stobbs took the place of Kramer and tossed four innings of scoreless ball, allowing only one hit and one walk. Two Browns reached base on Boston errors, however.
Stobbs fanned five batters during his appearance. Lou Stringer pinch hit for Stobbs in the eighth, and the Red Sox turned the ball over to Earl Johnson, with some trepidation. In two innings, Johnson allowed a double, single and walked two, putting a runner on third in each of his two innings of work, yet somehow, he escaped unscathed.
Though Johnson was the pitcher of record when Stephens singled in DiMaggio and Pesky in the top of the ninth, the official scorer invoked a seldom used clause in which he can grant the reliever deemed “most effective” with credit for the victory.
He did so in this case, and Stobbs(1-0) came away with his first win of the year.
