BROWNS BEAT RED SOX IN BOTTOM OF NINTH INNING
Mickey McDermott pitched six innings to a no decision and Walt Masterson(2-2) was tagged with the loss, as St. Louis beat Boston, 3-2. Boston failed to take advantage of the Yankees loss to the Tigers.
The Red Sox drew first blood, getting one run in the first inning, then Bobby Doerr’s(6) solo blast in the top of the third made it 2-0. Despite three walks, McDermott kept the Browns at bay until the home fifth. Sherm Lollar singled and pitcher, Ned Garver bunted him over. Andy Anderson flew out, but Bob Dillinger drew a walk, then Jerry Priddy doubled, plating Lollar. Jack Graham popped out to end the threat, but St. Louis was on the board.
Boston clung to a one run lead until Graham homered off Masterson, who had relieved McDermott after six innings.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when Dillinger singled in Lollar with the winning run.
The rubber game of the series is today.
