RED SOX BEAT BROWNS TO TAKE OVER FIRST PLACE IN AMERICAN LEAGUE
Mark this date. On June 9th, 1949, the Boston Red Sox took over sole possession of first place in the American League of professional baseball.
The powerful New York Yankees, playing without their top star, an injured Joe DiMaggio, have held down the top spot since April 24th.
That has now changed. Thanks to Boston’s 6-3 win over St. Louis, coupled with the Yankees, 9-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers, the Red Sox have reached the apex of the standings.
A big reason why is the playing of the red hot, Ted Williams. The Splendid Splinter smashed two home runs in the win, #’s 15 and 16 on the year. He drove in five of Boston’s six runs and is a leading candidate for player of the month for June.
Mel Parnell improved to a team best(8-1), while Frank Quinn picked up the save in relief.
The Red Sox now head to Chicago, to finish up their road trip against the White Sox.
Other American League scores: Detroit 9 New York 5; Philadelphia 1 Chicago 0. Only games scheduled.
