LATE HR BY DOERR GIVES BOSTON CUSHION IN 8-5 WIN OVER CHICAGO
The Red Sox held a slim one run lead over the White Sox, but Bobby Doerr’s(7) homer in the top of the ninth gave them a little breathing room and Boston went on to an 8-5 victory.
This game featured a crucial error by both teams. Doerr booted a two out ball off the bat of Joe Tipton, putting runners on first and second in the bottom of the second inning. Floyd Baker then lashed a two run triple off Ellis Kinder.
Chicago’s error came in the top of the fifth, as part of a four run inning for Boston. With one on, Merle Combs pinch hit for Kinder and reached on a gaffe by Baker. Dom DiMaggio followed with a two run double, Johnny Pesky singled in DiMaggio, Doerr doubled, sending Pesky to third. Ted Williams grounded out, but Pesky scored on Vern Stephens’ sac fly.
Each club also threw a runner out at the plate. In the top of the seventh, Doerr was gunned down at the plate by Dave Philley. Then in the home eighth, DiMaggio threw a rifle shot that nabbed Cass Michaels at home plate.
Tex Hughson(1-2) earned the win in relief, while Jack Kramer picked up a save.
Due to a scheduling quirk, Boston and Chicago will not play tomorrow, but will resume with a double header on Sunday.
Other American League scores: New York 3 Cleveland 2; Philadelphia at St. Louis ppd. Only game scheduled.
