RED SOX; WHITE SOX EACH WIN ONE; YANKS LOSE TO CLEVELAND
Twinbill Tidbits:
In his first game in the starting rotation, Walt Masterson(3-2) pitched a near complete game, going 8.2 innings, in a 3-1 Boston win over Chicago.
Masterson issued a hefty 7 free passes, but luckily for him, none of those would score. He lost his bid for a shutout in the top of the ninth, when Cass Michaels scored on Earl Rapp’s sac fly.
Ted Williams hit two home runs in this double header. The first(19) against Howie Judson in the seventh inning of the first game. #20 came in a pinch hitting role against Max Surkont in the bottom of the ninth in game two. At the time, William’s homer tied the game at five, but the White Sox would go on to win it in the tenth inning.
Frank Quinn’s(6-1) luck finally ran out. The Red Sox reliever suffered his first loss of the year, when he gave up back to back doubles and a single in the top of the tenth in game two.
A few of the starters were well rested. Matt Batts caught both games for Tibbetts. Hitchcock, O’Brien, Stringer and Combs also played.
O’Brien and Stringer both went deep in game two, the first homers of the year for each.
Chisox and Bosox series continues tomorrow.
Other American League scores: Cleveland 10 New York 4; Philadelphia 6 St. Louis 5; Detroit at Washington ppd.
