BOSTON HOLDS OFF CHICAGO TO TAKE 3 OUT OF 4 IN SERIES
Strat stats:
The Red Sox were able to escape with a 5-4 win.
Mel Parnell never found his groove, lasting just four innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and walked three.
WP, Tex Hughson(2-2) took over for Parnell and was steady, not spectacular, though he pitched two innings in dot phase. (For those unfamiliar, in Strat-O-Matic baseball, there is what’s called a pitcher’s point of weakness(P.O.W). Each pitcher has a different P.O.W. inning noted on his card. For starters, it’s based on innings, for relievers, it’s based on outs. A pitcher reaches his P.O.W when he allows three hits or walks in his P.O.W inning, or four hits or walks in any two innings.)
For example, if a starter’s P.O.W. inning is 6, and in the sixth inning he gives up a hit and walks two guys, he’s reached his P.O.W. What’s bad about this is that on the pitcher’s card, there are several black dots next to outs. If a guy hits what I call “Dot Phase”, those outs turn into singles, all runners advancing two bases.
It’s even worse for relievers, because their P.O.W’s are based on outs, not innings. Say a reliever’s # is 4. That means once he’s recorded four outs, then if he gives up the three h/w in one inning or four h/w over two innings, it’s Dot Phase time.
Hughson deserves a tip of the cap for going two innings after reaching Dot Phase.
Chuck Stobbs notched a save. Birdie Tebbetts hit his (7th) home run.
Billy Goodman has been so hot I tried him at the top of the order, but I think I’ll go back to the original lineup. He was 1-4, with a double and a run scored.
Ted Williams committed his first error of the year, and it was costly. Williams compounded a double by Dave Philley with a two base error, and letting Chicago pull to within one run in the top of the ninth.
Boston now welcomes the Detroit Tigers for a three game series.
