STEPHENS SETS PACE AS BOSOX SET NEW HIGH MARK FOR RUNS SCORED

The Red Sox destroyed the Tigers, 16-4, setting a new team benchmark for runs scored in a game.
Vern Stephens had a career day, belting two home runs(13,14), one a grand slam. He also singled twice, scored four runs and drove in six.
Vern’s grand slam is his third of the season.
Al Zarilla had three hits, including his (6th) homer.
Birdie Tebbetts had four hits and Johnny Pesky, three.
Walt Masterson(4-2), was the winning pitcher. He worked 7 innings, allowing two runs,(two unearned), on seven hits. He struck out two and walked four.
Tigers rookie, Marlin Stuart was left in as a sacrificial lamb, to finish out the game. In just two innings, he gave up Zarilla’s homer, as well as Stephen’s solo blast in the eighth. He also surrendered four singles and walked three.
Boston picked up a half game over the idle Yankees.
