O’BRIEN’S GAME WINNING SINGLE CAPS AMAZING RED SOX COMEBACK

Game notes:

Buckle your seats for this one. In a game that looked beyond hope, your Boston Red Sox battled back, scoring six runs over the last two innings, to defeat a battling Browns team, in dramatic fashion.

The game couldn’t have got off to a worse start for starter, Ellis Kinder. He gave up a three run blast to Roy Sievers, in the first inning, then allowed back to back home runs to Jack Graham and Andy Anderson, the very next inning.

The Red Sox found themselves quickly down 5-0, when Bobby Doerr got them on the board in the third, with his (10th) homer of the year.

In for Kinder after just two innings, Earl Johnson did his best to hold St. Louis at bay, while Boston chipped away at the Browns lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Billy Goodman smacked a two run triple, with Al Zarilla and Birdie Tebbetts aboard.

Johnson ran out of gas in the top of the sixth. Anderson singled, pinch hitter, Eddie Pellagrini reached on a walk, then John Sullivan doubled in one run.

Frank Quinn exchanged places with Johnson on the hill. He retired Stan Spence, but surrendered a two run single to Whitey Platt. Just like that, the Browns took an 8-3 lead.

The turning point of the game perhaps came in the bottom of the eighth. Red Embree, St. Louis’ third pitcher of the day, walked the bases loaded. Goodman singled in Vern Stephens, his third rbi of the day.

Earl Stringer pinch hit for Quinn and hit into a bases full, double play, with the Browns conceding the fifth Red Sox run. Dom DiMaggio then flew out to end the inning.

Chuck Stobbs(2-0) retired the Browns in the top of the ninth, setting up Boston’s dramatic final at bats.

Bosox third baseman, Merl Combs reached on an error by Anderson. Doerr lined out to second base. Ted Williams singled, Combs advancing to third. Vern Stephens hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Combs with Boston’s sixth run.

Al Zarilla then single and Tebbetts drew a walk, loading the bases. Goodman added two more rbi’s to his days total, by knocking in Williams and Zarilla.

With the score tied and Tebbetts on second, the Browns brought in Ralph Winegarner, to try and force extra innings.

Pinch hitter, Tommy O’Brien laced a base hit between center and right, and the hustling Tebbetts scored from second for a wild, 9-8 win.

Other American League scores: New York 5, Detroit 4; Chicago 2 Philadelphia 1; Cleveland 8 Washington 2.
