RAUCOUS BOSTON CROWD WATCHES RED SOX DISPATCH YANKS IN OPENER
Game notes: Bobby Doerr(12) remains red hot, slugging a grand slam as part of a five run Boston fifth inning. It was Bobby’s third homer in his last three games.
Dom DiMaggio outplayed brother Joe. Dom had two doubles and a single, while Joe, in his first appearance for his club this year, fanned three times and grounded out to end the game.
Ted Williams and Al Zarilla each had a single and a double.
Winning pitcher, Mickey McDermott(9-2) toiled for eight and one third innings, not allowing a run until he faltered in the top of the ninth. Hank Bauer hit a one out triple in the ninth and pinch hitter, Stuffy Stirnweiss drove him in with a single.
McDermott then gave way to Tex Hughson, who allowed a single to Jerry Coleman, a double to Phil Rizzuto and a sacrifice fly to Tommy Henrich, before DiMaggio grounded weakly to third to end the ballgame.
It was a real Jekyl and Hyde performance from McDermott, who set a season mark for strikeouts in a game with nine, but also had a season high seven walks.
The Red Sox currently sit four and a half games in front.
