1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

June 30. Gm# 67 Fenway Park New York 3 Boston 1

YANKEE CLIPPER AND VIC RASCHI HANDLE RED SOX RATHER EASILY

Game notes:

The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox, 3-1, taking two out of three games in the series.

Joe DiMaggio embarrassed Ted Williams in the latter’s home ballpark, in a matchup of the supposed two best hitters in the American League. The Yankee Clipper went 4-4 in the series finale and after struggling in the opener, hit two home runs, a double and three singles over the last two games. He scored four runs and drove in seven.

Williams, in contrast, had two doubles and two singles in three games. He scored once and had one rbi. The Kid was 0-4 in the final game.

Yankee starter, Vic Raschi had the Red Sox eating out of his hand. He went the distance in a complete game, three hitter. Only a solo homer by Vern Stephens(17), in the fifth inning, spoiled a shutout.

Billy Goodman was 0-2, with a walk, ending an 11 game hit streak.

Ellis Kinder(2-4) was the losing pitcher.

Despite the bad taste left by the losses to New York, Boston had a successful home stand, going 11-6. They now head out on the road, first stopping at Philadelphia, to battle the third place A’s.

Other American League scores: Detroit 12 Cleveland 4; Washington 8 Philadelphia 6. Only games scheduled.
