1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

July 3. Gm# 70 Shibe Park Boston 7 Philadelphia 1

BOSTON COMPLETES SWEEP OF A’S WITH 7-1 EXCLAMATION POINT

Game notes:

The Red Sox rocked Athletics starter, Alex Kellner for five runs in the first inning, enroute to a 7-1 rout, and a three game sweep of Philadelphia.

Johnny Pesky, Ted Williams, Vern Stephens and Tommy O’Brien all had two baggers. Pesky had a pair of doubles included in a four hit day at the plate.

Mel Parnell(11-1) earned a complete game victory, limiting Philadelphia to just five hits, though he also issued five base on balls.

The Red Sox are now set for a three game set with their arch rival New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The series kicks off with a double header on July 4th.

The Bosox picked up a game in the standings because, coupled with their win, the Senators defeated the Yankees.

You’ll recall, Boston dropped two out of three to the Yanks recently at Fenway Park.

Other American League scores: Cleveland 4, 4 St. Louis 3, 3; Chicago 8 Detroit 4; Washington 2 New York 1.
