RED SOX TAKE TWO FROM YANKEES; INCREASE LEAD TO 5.5 GAMES
Twinbill Tidbits:
Boston was terrific over the Independence Day holiday, taking both ends of a double header at Yankee Stadium. That increases their lead over the second place Yanks by five and a half games.
They won the opener 8-6, with the team slugging five home runs, including two by Ted Williams(21,22). Williams also tripled off the top of the wall, just missing an opportunity to join Hank Bauer and Joe Gordon as the only Stratballers with 3 homers in a game.
Bobby Doerr(14), Birdie Tebbetts(8) and Billy Goodman(2) also went deep for Boston.
Ellis Kinder(3-4) notched his third complete game win, scattering seven hits, while fanning five.
In the second game, the Red Sox scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning, after the game had been deadlocked at three all, since the fifth inning.
Doerr, Stephens and Tibbetts were all rested in this game, and the bench did a good job. Billy Stringer, in for Doerr, doubled to lead off the top of the tenth. Ted Williams then drew his fourth walk of the day. Merl Combs, who was replacing Stephens, singled, loading the bases. A Yankee pitching change would follow.
Then Al Zarilla, who has been on the pine for a couple games after going 0-15, smacked a two run single, giving Boston the lead.
Matt Batts, who was spelling Birdie Tebbitts, walked to reload the bases. Billy Goodman hit into a double play, but a third and final run scored.
Walt Masterson started and gave up the three Yankee runs, but the two relievers who followed him, Tex Hughson and Frank Quinn(6-4) didn’t allow any.
Yankee star, Joe DiMaggio, who is a tough customer to hold down, had two doubles and two singles over the two games.
The two clubs face off in the finale, with Mickey McDermott facing Eddie Lopat.
Other American League scores: Cleveland 3, 7 Detroit 2, 3; Chicago 12, 2 St. Louis 5, 4; Philadelphia 9, 8, Washington 7, 0.
