July 5. Gm# 73 Yankee Stadium Boston 5 New York 4
RED SOX SCORE IN TOP OF 9TH TO BEAT YANKS; SWEEP ALL THREE GAMES
Call it the Boston Massacre. The Red Sox came into Yankee Stadium, saw, and conquered, winning all three games in the series, to a take a 6.5 game lead over the second place Yankees.
The finale was a scratch and claw affair, with New York drawing first blood, when Jerry Coleman tripled off Mickey McDermott, in the first, later scoring on Hank Bauer’s sacrifice fly.
Eddie Lopat set down the first seven Red Sox he faced, before Walt Dropo, in for Billy Goodman, doubled. After McDermott walked, Dom DiMaggio singled in Dropo, with McDermott advancing to third. Johnny Pesky’s single gave Boston a 2-1 lead.
A Johnny Lindell, two run homer in the last of the fourth would give New York back the lead, 3-2.
McDermott was working on two days rest, due to the recent double header, and Boston decided to pinch hit for him early. It paid off, as Billy Stringer(2) hit a pinch hit home run, to retie the game at three all.
New York went up again, 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh, when Dick Kryhoski singled off Jack Kramer, on in relief of McDermott. Johnny Mize pinch hit and lined out, but Coleman followed with another base hit. Phil Rizzuto flew out to short left field, but Bauer singled, plating Kryhoski. Joe DiMaggio then flew out to brother Dom, ending the inning.
In the top of the eighth, pinch hitter, Merl Combs singled off Ralph Buxton. Dom D followed with another single. Pesky flew out, but Doerr walked, loading the bases. New York went to lefty, Tommy Byrne, who’s only job was to retire Ted Williams with the bases juiced. He could not, walking Williams to force in a run and once again, the game was tied.
The fourth Yankee pitcher of the day, Bob Porterfield, got two quick outs in the top of the ninth. However, Chuck Stobbs(3-0), in for Kramer, was batting, due to Boston running low on pitchers in case the game went into extra innings.
Stobbs worked a base on balls, and amazingly, DiMaggio got on with a second free pass. Pesky doubled, putting Boston up for good.
Stobbs survived a two out, base loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth, getting Yogi Berra to fly out to right field to end the game.
Boston now heads to Washington for a quick two games with the Senators, before heading home for a very brief four game home stand with Philadelphia.
Other American League scores: Cleveland 8 Detroit 1; St. Louis 9 Chicago 5. Only games scheduled.
