BOSOX RETURN TO FENWAY; HANG 15 RUNS ON ATHLETICS
After sweeping Philadelphia and New York on the road, the Red Sox returned to Fenway Park and pasted the Athletics, 15-8, for their eighth straight win.
Dom DiMaggio(6) had a homer, double and two singles and scored three runs; Johnny Pesky had three singles and a walk; Birdie Tebbetts had a double and a single and Vern Stephens and Billy Goodman each had two hits.
Despite the offensive onslaught, starter and winning pitcher, Walt Masterson(6-2), was in danger of getting a no decision in the game, despite leaving after five innings with a 9-2 lead.
That’s because Boston’s bullpen, specifically, Earl Johnson and Tex Hughson, allowed six runs over the last two innings. Johnson’s line was: 3.1IP, 4R(1UE), 3 H, 1K, 4W, 1WP. Hughson’s line was: .2IP, 1R, 1H, 1K, 1HR.
