July 9. Gm# 76 Fenway Park Philadelphia 7 Boston 0
KELLNER, CHAPMAN, HELP ATHLETICS END RED SOX WIN STREAK, 7-0
Game notes:
Sam Chapman hit two home runs and Eddie Joost added another to help Philadelphia end an eight game win streak for Boston.
On the mound, Alex Kellner scattered six hits in a shutout win. The last time Boston was blanked was on June 14th, by Bob Feller of Cleveland.
Both Ted Williams and Vern Stephens took the collar in this game. Birdie Tebbetts, with two singles, was the only Red Sox player with more than one hit.
Losing pitcher, Mickey McDermott(9-4) was cuffed around. He gave up homers to Joost and Chapman, in the first inning and five runs in total in just three and two thirds innings.
However, the much maligned Boston bullpen did a credible job. Frank Quinn worked 4.1 innings, giving up one unearned run on three hits, while Chuck Stobbs allowed one run on Chapman’s second homer.
Fortunately for Boston, the Senators defeated the Yankees.
The clubs finsh up the series with a double header.
Other American League games: Washington 7 New York 5; Cleveland at St. Louis-ppd; Chicago and Detroit were not scheduled.
