RED SOX SPLIT TWINBILL WITH ATHLETICS; YANKS WASHED OUT VS SENATORS

Game notes:

Boston split their double header with Philadelphia. New York was rained out both games against Washington.

Red Sox fans got a wide variety in this double header. They saw a 12-1 rout in the first game, coming one day after being shutout, then saw another epic bullpen collapse in the night cap, as they lost, 10-9.

Mel Parnell(13-1) continues his brilliant season. He pitched a six hit complete game, the seventh time this year he has gone the distance in a game. The win was the tenth straight for Parnell, who has been named the starting pitcher for the American League in this year’s All Star game.

Ted Williams(23) led the offense in game one, with a homer, double and a single. Bobby Doerr was 4-5 with a double and three runs scored. Al Zarilla hit his (7th) home run in this game.

Pat Dobson returned from the injured list and was very solid for six innings. He allowed two runs, but both were unearned and scattered six hits. He had plenty of run support, including a three run homer by Vern Stephens(19). His teammates staked him to a 9-2 lead after six.

Unfortunately, Boston’s bullpen put on another embarrassing display, allowing 8 runs over the last two innings. Here’s the pitcher’s lines: Hughson: 1.1IP, 3R, 2H, 1K, 2W; Johnson: 0IP, 2R, 2H, 1W, 1HBP; Kramer: (3-2) 1.2IP, 3R, 2H, 1W, 1HR, Stobbs: 1IP, OR, OH.

As can be seen, the only reliever who didn’t fold like a deck of cards was Chuck Stobbs.

The home run that Kramer gave up was a three run shot, hit by Sam Chapman. The Philadelphia center fielder killed Boston in this series, hitting four homers, a double, three singles and he drew two walks.

There will be no games in the league tomorrow, the next day is the All Star game, then there is another day off before play resumes.

Other American League scores: Chicago 4,0 Detroit 2, 1; Cleveland 7 St. Louis 4 second game rained out; Washington at New York both games rained out.
