STRINGER, O’BRIEN HIT 9TH INNING DOUBLES TO RALLY SOX PAST INDIANS

With the game tied at one each, Lou Stringer pinch hit for Frank Quinn(9-4) in the ninth inning, with two on and two out and laced a double, scoring Al Zarilla and sending Birdie Tebbetts to third. A Ray Boone error off the bat of Billy Goodman allowed Tebbetts to trot home, then Tommy O’Brien smacked the second two bagger of the inning, staking Boston to a 4-1 lead.

Of course, Boston’s bullpen can do nothing the easy way. Tex Hughson, who replaced Quinn, got a quick two outs, then gave up a single to Bob Kennedy, walked Jim Hegan and pinch hitter, Luke Easter, which loaded the bases. Dale Mitchell then singled in Kennedy, and at that point, the Red Sox pulled the plug on Hughson, and went to Jack Kramer, who got Boone to pop up to first for the final out of the game.

The White Sox, whom Boston faces next, were kind enough to beat the Yankees, thereby pushing the Red Sox lead back to 6.5 games.

Other American League scores: Chicago 6 New York 5; Philadelphia 13 Detroit 8 Only games scheduled.
