BOSTON TAKES BOTH ENDS OF TWINBILL; COMPLETES FOUR GAME SWEEP
The Red Sox took both games of a double header, completing a four game sweep of the St. Louis Browns. The Yankees beat the Tigers, but Boston now holds a 7.5 game lead over New York.
Ted Williams(26,27) homered in both games, and Walt Masterson(7-2) tosses his best game of the year in the second contest.
Williams doubled in the opener, Birdie Tebbetts tripled and Vern Stephens hit three singles.
The Splendid Splinter was even better in the second game, going 4-5, with a homer and three singles. He also scored three runs.
Masterson, who filed in so admirably for the injured Joe Dobson, threw a complete game, three hitter in a spot start. Walt had only one bad inning, the fourth, in which he issued three walks and a wild pitch. That would cost him a shutout, but he quickly settled down and finished strong.
Lou Stringer(4) also pulled his weight in game two, belting a three run homer, while spelling Bobby Doerr.
Boston is idle tomorrow, then welcomes Chicago for three games at Fenway Park.
