PARNELL OVERCOMES ROUGH START TO WIN FIFTEENTH GAME

Things looked shaky for Mel Parnell(15-3) early on, as he gave up four runs in the top of the first, the Browns tagging him for two doubles, three singles and a sacrifice fly.

However, his teammates responded, Ted Williams clubbed a three run home run in the bottom of the first, his (35th) and Dom DiMaggio and Bobby Doerr both later tripled, as Boston went on to an 8-5 win over St. Louis. Vern Stephens had three hits, one a double.

Parnell settled down after his poor first inning, at one point, retiring 13 in a row, before back to back doubles in the top of the ninth, forced the Red Sox to go to Frank Quinn in relief. Quinn was able to get the final two outs to end the game.

Other American League scores: New York 7 Detroit 4; Philadelphia 3 Chicago 2; Cleveland at Washington was ppd.
