SILVERA’S TWO COSTLY ERRORS DOOM YANKS AS RED SOX TAKE OPENING GAME

With Yogi Berra on the shelf, the Yankees had to go with Charlie Silvera behind the plate and it was costly. Silvera made two errors, both leading to Boston runs and the Red Sox went on to win, 7-3.

The game was close early, with New York holding a slim, 3-2 lead, but the Red Sox exploded for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ted Willams(36) hit a home run for Boston, while Phil Rizzuto went deep for the Yankees.

Ellis Kinder(9-4) won his sixth straight decision.
