August 10. Gm# 106. Fenway Park Boston 9 New York 5
RED SOX BELT 3 HOME RUNS IN ONE INNING TO POWER PAST YANKEES, 9-5
Pinch hitter, Matt Batts(2), Dom DiMaggio(8) and Bobby Doerr(19) all belted home runs as part of a five run, eighth inning, as Boston defeated the New York Yankees for the second straight day, this time by a 9-5 score.
New York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, off Ellis Kinder. The Red Sox starter, was able to keep the Yanks from further scoring until the seventh inning, despite several close calls. Three times, the Bronx Bombers had a man on third and could not push the run across.
Earl Johnson(3-3) took over for Kinder in the eighth, and luckily for him, he was the pitcher of record when Boston exploded for 5 in the bottom of the eighth.
Johnson needed all that run support, for he surrendered a three run homer to Phil Rizzutto, in the top of the ninth.
After the homer and three singles surrendered by Johnson, Frank Quinn had to come in and get the last two outs.
