RED SOX DESTROY SENATORS IN TWIN BILL SWEEP
Boston vanquished the struggling Washington Senators, twice yesterday, winning the first of two, in a 10-4 rout, then scoring seven runs in the eight inning, to pull out an amazing comeback win in game two.
Vern Stephens(23) and Al Zarilla(11) hit back to back home runs in the fourth inning of game one. Ted Williams had a double and a pair of singles. Johnny Pesky crossed the dish, three times, Dom DiMaggio, twice.
Mel Parnell(17-3) was not his usual, dominant self, as Washington tagged him for three runs on seven hits, in just six innings, but he was still good enough to earn the victory.
Game two saw the Senators get out to a 4-0 lead, through seven and a half innings. Washington starter, Lloyd Hittle was able to keep a powerful Red Sox line up at bay, up till then.
After Mickey Harris relieved Hittle and got the first two outs in the eighth, it all came apart. Harris gave up a single to DiMaggio and walked Billy Goodman. Then Vern Stephens, who had committed two errors in the game, both leading to runs, got a small measure of revenge, when he reached on Roberto Ortiz’ misplay in the outfield.
Ted Williams then drew a base on balls and Washington called on Dick Welteroth. He proceeded to walk Tommy O’Brien, give up a single to Merl Combs, then, the coup de grace, a grand slam home run to Matt Batts(3), who was filling in for Birdie Tebbets, behind the plate.
Earl Johnson(4-3), who was on in relief of starter, Chuck Stobbs, got the win. However, Johnson, who can never seem to do things the easy way, issued three walks, and the Senators’ fifth run, in the top of the ninth.
Boston still has three more games at home with the Senators. A single game is today and another double header the following day.
