MCDERMOTT FILLS IN FOR KINDER; WINS SQUEAKER ON SHORT REST

Scheduled starter, Ellis Kinder was scratched, due to a personal issue, so Mickey McDermott(11-9) stepped in and pitched on two days rest.

The lanky lefty was up to the task, limiting the Washington Senators to just one run, on two hits, in seven innings pitched. Washington’s lone run came in the top of the seventh, when Roberto Ortiz singled. He moved up on another base hit by Clyde Vollmer, then a wild pitch by McDermott sent him to third. Eddie Robinson hit into a double play, but Ortiz scored.

Boston scored in the third and fourth innings. McDermott helped himself, lacing a scorching triple into the corner, to start the bottom of the third inning. DomDiMaggio’s long flyout would plate the Boston moundsman.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ted Williams doubled and two batters later, Billy Goodman knocked him in with a single, for a much needed insurance run.

The unusual six game series continues today with yet another double header. Kinder will go in game one for Boston, it will likely be Jack Kramer in game two. Washington has not named their starters.

Other American League scores: New York 9 Philadelphia 7; Detroit 12 St. Louis 9
