MEL PARNELL STUMBLES IN 7TH AND LOSES FOR ONLY FOURTH TIME
Boston ace, Mel Parnell(17-4), looked to be on his way to yet another victory, however, the Philadelphia A’s had other ideas.
The A’s’ starter, Joe Coleman, issued four walks in the first inning, putting the Red Sox on top, 1-0. Boston would add another run in the fifth, when Vern Stephens singled in Bobby Doerr.
Parnell held Philadelphia scoreless through seven innings, but stumbled in the eighth. Todd Davis singled, then Nellie Fox doubled, sending Davis to third. A Parnell wild pitch scored Davis with the A’s first run.
Parnell got Joe Astroth to line out, but Hank Majeski, pinch hitting for Coleman, singled to right, scoring Fox.
Eddie Joost drew a base on balls, putting runners on first and second. Boston stuck with Mel, hoping he could recover, but when Don White tapped an infield single, loading the bases, the Red Sox went to Frank Quinn.
Elmer Valo hit a sacrifice fly, to put the A’s on top for the first time. Bubba Harris shut Boston down in relief for two innings and that was that.
Other American League scores: Cleveland 5 Detroit 0; Chicago 4 St. Louis 0; Washington at New York ppd rain.
