MCDERMOTT FANS A DOZEN AS BOSTON STEAMROLLS CHICAGO
Mickey McDermott(13-9) struck out a season high, 12 batters, and his teammates pounded out 10 runs, as the Red Sox demolished the White Sox, 10-2.
McDermott’s only struggles came in the first inning, in which Chicago scored twice. With one out, Mickey gave up a single to Dave Philley and a double to Luke Appling. Cass Michaels’ sacrifice fly scored one run, then Johnny Ostrowski’s two bagger, brought in the second run.
But McDermott would quickly settle down, at one point retiring 18 in a row. His twelve strikeouts were the most by a Red Sox pitcher in a game this year.
Johnny Pesky and Bobby Doerr each had three hits, with Pesky scoring three times. Ted Williams and Al Zarilla each had two hits, Zarilla(14) homered for the second straight game.
DomDiMaggio did not play in this game, after having been hit by a pitch in the game prior.
New York beat Cleveland to keep pace. Boston and Chicago play a double header next.
Other American League scores: New York 6 Cleveland 3; Detroit 2 Washington 1; Philadelphia 9 St. Louis 5
