TEBBETTS INJURY CASTS PALL OVER PARNELL’S 19TH VICTORY

Mel Parnell(19-4) got the win in a 3-1 Boston victory over Chicago, but neither he or his teammates were too happy after the game.

That’s because Boston’s # 1 catcher, Birdie Tebbetts, suffered a leg injury in the fourth inning. Tebbetts left the game and the latest news is that he will be on the shelf for at least two weeks.

That means backup backstop, Matt Batts will have to take the reins, for much of the September stretch run. Batts is a capable catcher, but he is not Tebbetts, so we will have to see how things pan out.

As for Parnell, he allowed just one run in seven and two thirds innings. He gave up six hits, along with three strikeouts and a walk and also hit a batter.

Johnny Pesky and Bobby Doerr were the only Red Sox with two hits. Ted Williams was given the day off.

Boston ended up taking three of four from Chicago.

The Red Sox’ road trip continues to Cleveland, where Boston has a three game series with the Indians.

Other American League scores: New York 4 Cleveland 0; Detroit 7 Washington 6; St. Louis 5 Philadelphia 1
