1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

August 29. Gm#’s 126, 127. Municipal Stadium Boston 2, 2 Cleveland 4, 1

ONE GAME FEATURES HR’S; THE SECOND IS A PITCHER’S DUEL, IN TWINBILL SPLIT

Boston dropped the first of two against Cleveland, when the Indians’ Joe Gordon belted two home runs, a three run clout in the last of the third and a solo shot, in the sixth. The final score was Cleveland 4 Boston 1.

Mickey McDermott(13-10) allowed both homers and took the loss.

The Red Sox bounced back in the second game, which was a fine pitcher’s duel between winner, Walt Masterson(8-2) and losing pitcher, Mike Garcia. Boston won, 2-1.

Cleveland manufactured a run in the third, when Mike Hegan singled, advanced on a sacrifice, then later scored on a ground ball.

Boston took the lead in the top of the sixth, when Garcia walked Ted Williams, then Vern Stephens slammed his 25th home run of the season.

The home run was only the fourth hit Garcia allowed, though he did issue six walks.

The road trip continues as Boston moves on to Detroit to take on the third place Tigers.

Other American League scores: Detroit 4 Philadelphia; St. Louis 2 Washington. Only games scheduled.
