MEL PARNELL LOSES 1-0 HEARTBREAKER TO TIGERS’ HAL NEWHOUSER
Prince Hal got the better of Mel Parnell, despite a fine effort from Boston’s best moundsman, as Detroit nipped the Red Sox, 1-0. Newhouser collected the shutout.
Parnell(19-5), pitched the entire game, allowing only three hits and three walks. The only tally of the game was unearned, coming for the Tigers in the bottom of the third, courtesy of a Billy Goodman bobble.
For the Red Sox part, though they outhit the Tigers, 6-3, they simply could not squeeze a run across the plate, no matter how hard they tried. Seven Boston baserunners were left stranded, three of those in scoring position.
Panell’s quest for win #20 will have to wait. His teammates should send the Browns a bouquet of flowers, for once again they dispatched the second place Yanks.
Other American League scores: St. Louis 10 New York 3; Chicago 4 Washington 2; Philadelphia 6, 2; Cleveland 7, 1.
