BOSTON BOUNCES BACK IN BIG WAY TO START SEPTEMBER STRETCH
After dropping a 1-0 decision yesterday, the Boston Red Sox came out firing on all cylinders and pummeled the Detroit Tigers by a score of 10-1.
The Red Sox scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Ted Williams(39) and Vern Stephens(26) hit back to back home runs in that inning, Williams’ was a grand slam. Bobby Doerr and Johnny Pesky added three hits apiece.
As strong as the hitting was, the pitching was even stronger. Ellis Kinder(12-5) went the distance, allowing just one run on only three hits. Two of those hits, a double by Vic Wertz and a triple by Charlie Kell, led to the Tigers only run, but that didn’t occur until the bottom of the ninth.
The Yankees finally beat St. Louis, after dropping their first two games there.
Boston heads back to Fenway for a short homestand, beginning with the Philadelphia Athletics.
Other American League scores: Chicago 3 Washington 0; Cleveland 2 Philadelphia 1; New York 4 St. Louis 3.
