FERRIS FAIN’S THREE RUN HOMER IS TOO MUCH FOR BOSTON TO OVERCOME

Philadelphia’s Ferris Fain belted a three run home run in the top of the fifth off Mickey McDermott(13-11), leading the Athletics to a 4-2 win, in the first of three games against the Red Sox.

Boston’s runs came in the bottom of the fourth, when Bobby Doerr doubled and Ted Williams singled him in and then in the last of the sixth, when Johnny Pesky singled and later scored on an Al Zarilla double.

New York was idle, thereby picking up a half game due to the Boston loss.
