1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

September 4. Gm# 133 Fenway Park Philadelphia 6 Boston 2

ATHLETICS SWEEP SERIES; PARNELL HAS WORST GAME OF YEAR IN 6-2 LOSS

For the first time this season, the Red Sox have been swept in a series at home. The Philadelphia Athletics have won three straight against Boston.

It was hoped that the Red Sox’ top pitcher, Mel Parnell(19-6) would be able to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, Parnell turned in his worst performance of the year, allowing 6 runs in six innings. The twelve hits he gave up were also the most he surrendered in a ball game.

Boston once again benifited from a team playing spoiler, as the Washington Senators defeated the New York Yankees.

Those same Senators come to Fenway Park next.

Other American League scores: Cleveland 5 St. Louis 0; Detroit 5 Chicago 4; Washington 3 New York 2
