RED SOX SCORE TWICE IN TOP OF NINTH, STUNNING YANKS IN 5-4 WIN
Boston trailed by one run heading into the ninth inning, then put up two runs, while riding Frank Quinn(11-5) to victory in relief.
Billy Goodman got things started in the first inning with a two out triple. He trotted home on a Jerry Coleman bobble. Ted Williams, with a runner aboard, gave starter, Mickey McDermott a nice, three run lead, with his (41st) home run of the year.
New York broke through in the last of the fifth. Charlie Keller walked, moved to third on a Coleman single, as he attempted to redeem himself for the earlier error. Then Phil Rizzuto’s single plated Keller, to make it 3-1.
McDermott kept plugging away, but his gas tank ran dry in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, McDermott walked Billy Johnson and Coleman back to back. Pinch hitter, Hank Bauer, batting for Yanks starter, Allie Reynolds, singled, scoring Johnson and sending Coleman to third base.
Phil Rizzuto’s sacrifice fly knocked Coleman in, tying the game at three runs apiece. After McDermott walked Cliff Mapes, his sixth free pass of the day, he got third baseman, Bobby Brown to ground out, ending the inning.
New York would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Boston, knowing several lefties would be coming to bat, played the percentages and brought in left handed reliever, Chuck Stobbs. It would prove to be the wrong move.
Joe DiMaggio singled. When Yogi Berra also singled, DiMaggio attempted to advance to third, but was gunned down by a throw from his brother, Dom. Stobbs then walked Keller and issued a single to Johnson, which scored Berra.
Boston brought in Quinn, who got the final two outs of the inning. In the top of the ninth, Al Zarilla singled off Cuddles Marshall. Matt Batts then walked and a Marshall wild pitch advanced both runners. After Quinn flew out, DiMaggio’s double knocked in both runners.
Quinn set the Yankees down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Other American League scores: Chicago 7 St. Louis 1; Washington at Philadelphia and Cleveland at Detroit were ppd.
