HAL NEWHOUSER FLIPS SCRIPT, TOSSES ONE HITTER AGAINST RED SOX

One day after Boston’s Mitch McDermott shutout the Detroit Tigers, Hal Newhouser turned the tables in a big way, pitching a one hitter, while his teammates pounded out an 8-0 win.

Things didn’t go perfectly well for Newhouser, he issued five walks, but a weak single by Ted Williams in the first inning, was the only hit the Tiger hurler allowed.

Starter Joe Dobson(8-5) left after six and a third innings, trailing by four runs. Chuck Stobbs struggled in relief, quickly loading the bases. Frank Quinn came in, hoping to put out the fire, but instead, threw gasoline on it, giving up a grand slam to outfielder, Pat Mullin.

Vic Wertz, Don Kolloway and Johnny Lipon all had three hits apiece.

Worse for Boston, the Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Browns. They are now in a virtual tie with Detroit for second place.

Other American League scores: New York 2, 13 St. Louis 0, 7; Philadelphia 2 Cleveland 1; Chicago 8 Washington 1
