RED SOX PULL OUT PERHAPS THE WILDEST GAME SO FAR THIS SEASON
You wouldn’t expect a last place team to give a first place team such a battle, but the cellar dwelling, St. Louis Browns did exactly that, making Boston use everything in their arsenal to pull out a 14-13 win on Al Zarilla’s rbi single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Red Sox opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning, but it was apparent that Ellis Kinder didn’t have his stuff, as he allowed five runs in the top of the third.
The game had five lead changes, with St. Louis’ Jerry Priddy going a perfect 5-5, Bob Dillinger scoring four runs and catcher, Les Moss, belting two home runs.
Fortunately, Boston had some heavy hitters too, including Ted Williams, who crossed the dish four times and had four hits, including a double and a triple. Dom DiMaggio, Al Zarilla and Vern Stephens all had three hits. DiMaggio(10) and Stevens(28) both homered.
Chuck Stobbs(7-2) notched the win in relief.
Other American League scores: New York 5 Detroit 4; Chicago 8 Philadelphia 5; Cleveland 8 Washington 3
