RANDY GUMPERT HOLDS BOSTON TO ONE HIT IN 4-1 WHITE SOX WIN
Ted Williams broke up Randy Gumpert’s bid for a no hitter, with his (45th) home run in the seventh inning, but despite losing the no-no and a shutout on one pitch, Gumpert led his club to a 4-1, complete game victory.
Chicago got three runs in the top of the fifth off Mickey McDermott(14-12), with rbi’s from Dave Philley and two from Luke Appling. Johnny Ostrowski then hit a solo shot in the sixth.
Gumbert did issue four walks and also hit a batter.
The Yankees beat Cleveland to inch closer in the standings.
