WILLIAMS’ 46TH HR SPOILS LEMON’S SHUTOUT BID BUT BOSOX LOSE GAME

For the second straight game, a Ted Williams home run has spoiled a pitcher’s afternoon. First, he broke up Randy Gumpert’s bid for a no hitter, with a solo shot in the seventh, then today, with Bob Lemon only one out away from a shutout, Williams blasted his(46th) homer of the year.

Despite that, Cleveland won the game, 2-1. Starter, Joe Dobson and reliever, Tex Hughson(5-5) both issued leadoff walks, which came around to score, in the top of the eighth and ninth, respectively.

The Yankees beat the White Sox, to shave another game off Boston’s lead for the pennant.

Other American League scores: New York 7 Cleveland 3; Philadelphia 7, 7 St. Louis 5, 4; Detroit 3, 5 Washington 2, 2.
