CALVERT OUT DUELS PARNELL WITH SHUTOUT OF RED SOX

Washington’s Paul Calvert got the best of it in this one, beating the Boston Red Sox, 2-0 and handing Mel Parnell(22-7) his seventh loss of the season.

Parnell cost himself a chance to tie the Stratball record for wins in a season, which is held by Jack Morris ’83 Tigers, with 24. He is scheduled to get one more start and sits at 22 wins. He, of course, would have needed to win this game and his last start to tie the record.

Mel gave up two runs in the first inning. With one out, Sherry Robertson singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bud Stewert walked, then Roberto Ortiz singled, scoring Robertson and sending Stewart to third. Eddie Robinson’s sacrifice fly made it 2-0 and that is all that the Senators needed.

The two teams go at it again today.

Other American League scores: Cleveland 3 Chicago 2; New York 3 Philadelphia 1; only games scheduled.
