RED SOX END SEASON WITH A BANG; ROUT YANKEES FOR 100TH WIN
WILLIAMS HITS 50TH HR IN LAST AT BAT; PERNELL WINS 23RD GAME
After enduring a long losing streak to wind down the season, the Boston Red Sox finally broke through, with a convincing 10-3 win over the New York Yankees.
The win, #100 on the season, set a new high mark for team wins in Stratball.
Ted Williams joined Ralph Kiner of the ’49 Pittsburgh Pirates as the only players with fifty or more homeruns in a season. Williams blasted his 50th homerun in his last at bat of the game, putting a cap on a dominant Boston performance.
Williams set several team and Stratball records, details of which will be posted soon.
As sure as Williams was Boston’s best hitter, Mel Parnell(23-7) was the teams best hitter. After the club had dropped five straight games, he took the reins and led the team to victory, grinded out a complete game win, his 12th this year.
Along with Williams, Johnny Pesky and Bobby Doerr tripled, while Birdie Tebbetts, Al Zarilla and Vern Stephens each had two baggers.
Here are the other American League scores on the final day of the season: Cleveland 8 Detroit 4; Washington 3 Philadelphia 0, Chicago 4, 3 St. Louis 3, 5.
Final individual statistics will be tabulated and posted soon.
