BUCS WIN OPENING DAY THRILLER, 5-4 IN TEN INNINGS
The Pittsburgh Pirates have tallied their first victory of the 1960 season, beating the Milwaukee Braves, 5-4, in ten innings.
The Bucs scored twice in the top of the tenth, once on a sacrifice fly by Bill Mazeroski and then on an rbi single by Smokey Burgess.
The team then held their collective breath while, Fred Green(1-0), the pitcher of record, gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the tenth, but held on to a one run lead and the victory.
Vernon Law and Warren Spahn battled out of the gate, Law going six innings, Spahn seven. Dick Groat singled in Don Hoak with the game’s first run, in the top of the third.
Eddie Matthews tied it with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth. Dick Schofield pinch hit for Law in the seventh and his rbi single put Pittsburgh back in front, 2-1.
Bob Skinner doubled, plating Hoak in the top of the ninth, increasing the Pirates lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Bob Bruton led off with a walk. Elroy Face retired Red Schoendiest and Matthews and was one out away from victory, when Henry Aaron threw a monkey wrench into Pittsburgh’s plans, with a two run, opposite field homer, retying the game at three all.
Dick Stuart led off the top of the tenth with a basehit. Bill Virdon doubled, putting runners on second and third. Maz’s sac fly put the Pirates up one, then Burgess’ single brought Virdon in, with a key insurance run.
In Milwaukee’s last at bats, Green fanned Al Spangler for the first out, but misplayed a ball off the bat off Johnny Logan. Del Crandall singled, as did Don McMahon, loading the bases.
Bruton hit a ground ball, forcing McMahon, but allowing Logan to score. With two out, Schoendiest flew out to left, ending the game.
The Pirates are not scheduled tomorrow. They will fly home to begin their first homestand of the season against the Cincinnati Reds on April 14.
Other National League scores: Cincinnati 9, Philadelphia 4; Los Angeles 3, Chicago 2; San Francisco 3 St. Louis 1.
