PIRATES TAKE HOME OPENER WITH 10-1 ROUT OF REDLEGS

Bob Friend(1-0) pitched seven and two thirds strong innings and Don Hoak(1) led the offense with a single, double and three run homerun, as Pittsburgh routed Cincinnati in their home opener, 10-1.

Friend fanned eight and issued just one walk, before the Reds broke through with their first and only run in the top of the eighth. Joe Gibbon came out of the bullpen to take it the rest of the way.

Hoak tagged the Bucs first long ball of the season off Cal McLish in the third inning. Along with Hoak, Roberto Clemente was 4-5; Bob Skinner went 3-5, with a double and a triple and Bill Mazeroski and Dick Groat each had a pair of hits.

There are no games in the National League tomorrow. The Reds-Pirates series resumes on April 16.
